Live blog : The Revenant

PLEASE READ WITH CAUTION – THIS WILL OBVIOUSLY CONTAIN SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE REVENANT!!!!

16.38 – The film begins with whispering in a foreign language, which to me has connotations of both fear, as you whisper to be quiet and secretive, which therefore can connote solitude – is this going to forebode what happens throughout the film?
Who knows? Probably someone who’s already watched the film, of which is not me.

“… Don’t give up,

you hear me?

as long as you can still grab a breath, you fight

you breathe… keep breathing.”

The above quote is the final passage of whispering, and already two minutes into the film we’ve already encountered something quite deep.

16.47PM

They’re walking through water, looks pretty chilly.
They’ve got shotguns, and you can hear a shrill noise in the background, such as whistling, or screaming.
You can also hear a hog, of which I assume is what they’re trailing through the stream for with shotguns.

16.50PM

A lot of people have just been shot with arrows, it’s kinda crazy right now.
They’re being attacked but it doesn’t seem like they know who’s doing it, or where it’s coming from because the arrows are coming from many different directions.

There’s a methodic pounding of a drum every so often, it sounds like a slowing heart beat, mimicking death and gunshots.
It could also be predicting the future of those within the frame… DEATH (maybe, I’m not so sure yet)

16.53PM

Someone just got shot and fell off their horse.

Ouch.

16.56PM
A complete scene of devastation, despair and death.
Everything is grey.

A tree is on fire and it just fell onto their camp.

17.10PM

This film is so intense and dark that it requires 12,000% of my attention.
Leo’s character just got mauled by a bear, but it’s alright, he stabbed it several times.

And then Leo’s character fell down a hill, and the bear fell on top of him… If Leo makes another appearance I’ll be damned!

17.24PM

“Lay the rag over his eyes!”

One of the men, I’ll call him “Gingerbeard” wants to shoot Leo’s character, Glass (Hugh).

Gingerbeard has also informed his pals to care for Hugh as best as they can, and give him a proper burial when he dies, as they, like me, expect him to perish rather soon… It’s a complete shock he’s still alive!

17.32PM

They just tried to smother Hugh… To be fair, he was only trying to put him out of his misery…

17.37PM

How dare they try to buy Glass alive… He’s escaped death 3 times in the past 30 minutes….
17.53PM

Hugh just started a fire and cauterised his own wound.. Crazy

18.00PM

How he’s still alive is beyond me… He should have hypothermia by now, alongside frostbite

18.10PM

Hugh has made a new friend and uttered his first word in English… “Grizzly”

18.20PM

I don’t quite understand what’s going on… I think he was in the thing they make Homer Simpson do in The Simpsons Movie

18.21PM

Epiphany. Hugh just had an epiphany.

18.33PM

Would you believe me if I told you he was inside of a horse?

Cos he is

18.43PM

He’s found those who had left him dead… I think… I don’t know, I really don’t find this film interesting.  My favourite Leo film is The Wolf of Wallstreet ❤️

19.00PM

Hugh just hacked someone’s fingers off with an axe.

They’re now wrestling and I am not enjoying this movie.

19.03PM

“Revenge is in God’s hands… Not mine.”
19.06PM

Alas. It’s over.

Pete Docter, the director and co-writer of the wonderful film sent this inspirational message out to children.

“There are days you’re going to feel sad, you’re going to feel angry. People can’t help that, but you can make stuff. Make films, draw, write. It will make a world of difference.”

I really hope kids take this on board!

3.19AM

Kevin Hart, of whom Chris Rock introduced as next years’ host graced the stage, expressing his sorrow of not being in the front row, but it’s okay because he has a sparkly suit.

3.25AM
Chris Rock went to a cinema in Compton and spoke to cinema-goers, many of whom were black and asked them whether or not they had seen any of the Oscar nominated films from a list, with one woman adamant he was making the titles up,  yet there was a resounding “Yes” when he asked if they had seen ‘Straight Outta Compton’.

He then pulled out an Oscar award and asked the subjects to make their own speech as if they were accepting the award, and one wise man spoke of the current race row – It’s not just black people who need recognition, but the Asians and Hispanics too.

Amen, man going to the cinema in Compton, Amen.

3.32AM
The award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role goes to… Mark Rylance for his role in Bridge of Spies

3.39AM

The award for Best Documentary, Short Subject goes to… Mad Max <– He was just kidding…

The award goes to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for A Girl In The River – The Price of Forgiveness.
She has made an amazingly epic speech, I wish they didn’t play her out because what she was saying was so real. People hardly ever express what’s really going on in society without covering it in a filter, photoshopping it, or highly censoring it to make them look gr8.

3.44AM

The Award for the Best Documentary Feature goes to… Amy…

RIP Amy Winehouse.

3.46AM
I get the feeling Chris Rock won’t be invited back to host for a third time… His latest joke, one of an Asian orient was awkward, and far from funny.

4.05AM

The Award for The Best Live Action Short film goes to… Stutterer.

4.09AM

Sofia Vegara is REALLY REALLY glittery, on an Edward Cullen scale. It’s kinda crazy!

The award for The Best Foreign Language Film goes to a Hungarian film named… Son of Saul.

But back to Sofia, She’s so glittery that it reminded me of my simpler days, it must have been about 2002, or 2015, I can’t quite recall, but after a day of crafting I managed to make my dinner glittery by shaking my head at the dining table…. Instead of the freshly grated Parmesan than one is accustomed to, I had large specks of pink glitter. It was not tasty. They do say you are what you eat, so I guess I am a sparkling speck of glitter on this spaghetti bolognese place called earth.

4.12AM Vice President Joe Biden introduces his “friend”, Lady Gaga to perform

Her song was emotional, I guess, as most of the audience, notably Rachael McAdams and Kate Winslet, because they had tears in their eyes,

But I was kinda distracted because the Lady Gaga on stage looks so different from the Lady Gaga I first saw 8 years ago… BONKERS
4.25AM

Winner of best original musical score goes to Ennino Morricone for The Hateful Eight.

4.26AM
John Legend and Common present the award for best original song.

The award for Best Original Song goes to… Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith!

4.30AM

Sacha Baron Cohen has brought back one of my favourite people, Ali G! I actually met ALi G when he was filming Ali G InDaHouse waaay back. I was quite young, but when you have older brothers and working parents, it’s the kinda thing you’re accidentally exposed to.
I remember it vividly, he was at a sports centre, wearing an orange jumpsuit… BOOYAKASHA.

4.38AM

The award for best Directing goes to… Alejandro G. Inarritu for The Revenant.

He just told Leo that he is The Revenant, but will he win though…???????

4.45AM

The award for Best Actress in  leading role goes to… Amber Lovell in the Life and Times of Amber Lovell, a dramatic adaptation of her life.

BRIE LARSON FOR HER LEADING ROLE IN ROOM!

YOU GO, GIRL!

4.54AM

THE MOST ANTICIPATED, IN MY OPINION, AWARD OF THE NIGHT – BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE!

There’s always so much controversy surrounding this award each year when Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated, yet fails to win… And his face always looks like a little kid who didn’t get the puppy he desperately wants.

So…. The nominations have all been read out, and they’re about to announce the winner….

AND THE AWARD, FOR BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE GOES TO…. KANYE WEST!

LEONARDO DICAPRIO!

5.00AM

Leo’s speech was on fire. He spoke freely about the problems caused by global warming and spoke for those who don’t have a loud voice when it comes to this topic, as the ‘little people’ are often up against some form of big corporation who can silence a whole nation.

Leo seems pretty selfless and genuine, as he’s just picked up what is undeniably deemed as the biggest acting accolade, and therefore, the biggest accolade of his career, IMO.

I’m glad he finally made it as an Academy Award winner, he definitely deserves it for his years of acting brilliance.

5.02AM

THE LAST AWARD OF THE NIGHT, BEST FILM, GOES TO… SPOTLIGHT!

Thank you for reading my live blog of the Oscars, it’s been great,

You’ve been great,

and of course, I’ve been great.

Goodbye, and goodnight… or… Good morning!

TEACHERS ARE SAYING DU-BYE-BYE-BYE TO ENGLAND

TEACHERS ARE SAYING DU-BYE-BYE-BYE TO ENGLAND

A student educated in Dubai has said teachers actually have a higher work load, contrasting the argument that it’s the reason for their departure.

Caitlin Benstead, a psychology student in Kent was educated at British schools in Dubai explains why teachers may be attracted to new roles in the Gulf.

“Teachers would like Dubai for the weather and the ‘easy living’, as people call it.”

“They’re definitely drawn to Dubai because they don’t have to pay tax on their earnings, but I feel their work loads may be higher because they do so much for the students and give time during lunch and after school to help us.”

Caitlin also shares other reasons why teachers may be drawn to Dubai: “Culturally, it is brilliant. It’s so diverse, they embrace the local culture, as a result of this, respect and humility is developed.”grapj.png

According to the chief inspector of schools in England, Sir Michael Wilshaw, the country is facing a “teacher brain drain” at a time where nearly half of the newly trained teachers flee England for employment abroad.

Each year, there are 40,000 newly qualified teachers, with only 22,000 of these remaining in the UK to teach the 8.2 million school children in the UK.

Figures estimate that by 2020, there will be 582,000 more school-age children in the UK, yet with the high number of teachers fleeing the UK to teach abroad, this leaves us requiring 160,000 more teachers in the next three years to cope with the increase.

This means that the shortage is more than likely to be felt at any of the 669 schools in the Kent area as at present, there are 175 job adverts to teach at 122 schools in the Kent area.

Click here to find out why teachers are leaving the UK to teach abroad!

Bella Tanner and her family upped sticks and moved to Dubai.
On the reasons why teachers are drawn to Dubai, Bella said : “tax free salaries lure teachers to Dubai – it’s common for teachers to sign 2 year contracts, get free accommodation and once it’s up leave. It’s kind of a lifestyle choice too, the chance to do it seems fun and there’s nothing to lose at the end of the day, they can still go back to England and teach again.”

Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, told The Drop

“Performance related pay and a workload that for the majority of teachers is utterly punishing and unsustainable leaving little time for family or friends is driving teachers out in droves.
“Add to this the punitive and often pointless accountability system overseen by Sir Michael Wilshaw alongside his regular disparaging comments about the profession it is no surprise teaching in England has become an unattractive option.
“Teachers need to be given respect and be trusted to teach as well as appropriate levels of salary and improved conditions. If we don’t the Chief Inspector will continue to have a lot to worry about.”

HAPPY RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS DAY!

HAPPY RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS DAY!

HAPPY RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS DAY!

It’s wet, it’s windy and it’s Wednesday, aka ‘hump day’, so you’re more than likely not going to be in the best of moods.

This Wednesday, I found myself sat in Starbucks in Westbourne, with a coffee, a rose and pistachio mocha if you must know, when two women walked in with a bucket of sweets.

12.30pm – Starbucks, Westbourne, Bournemouth.

Screen Shot 2016-02-17 at 21.21.26
Rose and Pistachio mocha, with a rose whipped cream and pistachio macaroon sprinkling on the top… Excuse the lipstick mark…

As they handed out the sweets to the unwitting civilians, they were saying “Happy Random Act of Kindness Day!”, and urging people to ‘pay it forward’.

Wednesday February 17th marked the National Random Act of Kindness, wherein you do a good, and completely random deed, such as handing out sweets, paying for the coffee of the person behind you or doing something for someone you normally wouldn’t do.

Just a little thing, such as receiving a small packet of sweets could make a massive change to someone’s day, as it did mine, and from this I decided to pick my random acts of kindness.

As aforementioned, it was wet and windy, and being the unprepared Brit that I am, I was only armed with a beige mac and an afro, in a hope these items would protect me from the elements.

My first stop was the glamour-zone known as Asda.

14.23PM, Asda, St Pauls, Bournemouth

14.43PM – I’VE GOT THE GOODS!

14.47PM. This is Wendy, a very happy recipient of my Random Act of Kindness.

After the event, Wendy said: “It was completely unexpected, it’s horrible outside and I didn’t even expect you to leave the house today.
“I made sure that I told my colleagues to pay it forward when I shared the cookies with them!”

14.50PM – I’ve just finished my delivery and made someone very happy, I’m wet, I’m cold and I really want to go home.

IMG_5542

I also really need an umbrella.

On my way to the bus stop, I saw a homeless man sat on cold, wet pebbles and I felt it was imperative to share a random act of kindness with him, as he did not look very happy.

14.53PM – Slice and water.

IMG_5543

I know it’s not much, but it’s the best that I could do on a budget… Don’t be judgey, internet people.

-Update – He smiled, and genuinely, genuinely seemed happy.

15.00PM – I’ve just done my last random act before deciding to call it a day and head home!

It’s now 22.18PM, and upon reflection, National Random Act Of Kindness day shouldn’t be on one day per year, it should be everyday.
It only takes one little tiny thing to make someone happy, make their day a little brighter and turn their frown upside down.

It’s nice to be a nice human, it doesn’t have to cost a lot, it can cost very little or nothing at all… Don’t designate your kindness to one day per year, be kind all the time!

“We gotta make a change…
It’s time for us as a people to start makin’ some changes.
Let’s change the way we eat, let’s change the way we live
and let’s change the way we treat each other.
You see the old way wasn’t working so it’s on us to do
what we gotta do, to survive.”

TUPAC.

There’s an app for that…

There’s an app for that…

Students can now track their mental health using an app that takes taking a selfie to a whole new level.

It’s been reported that approximately 92% of students experience poor mental health whilst studying, which is one of the shocking statistics behind Mind UK’s new app, Emoodji.

Meet Greg, Keisha, Alice and Callum.

output_q6eE0Z.gif

They’re just a few of the great minds behind the creation of the app.
Emoodji, released today is an iPhone and Android app that can track ones mood throughout the days, weeks, months and years, giving you the ability to see how your mood changes.

Keisha Chan, the culture manager of 3 SIDED CUBE explains more about the app and how it may show correlation between certain moods and days of the week.

It’s been estimated that over half of students don’t feel comfortable admitting they’re struggling to cope, yet this app provides an easy and interactive way to get support from both your friends and Mind, making it easier for help to given to those in need.

The student-targeted app began production in August with the help of Bournemouth University students.

Callum Taylor, lead Android developer at 3 SIDED CUBE said, “we made what the students wanted, the app was essentially created from their direct feedback.”

The influence of the demographic was so strong that parts of the app that were left out were demanded to be included.

“Initially, the graph wasn’t going to be included, but it was such a requested feature that we swallowed the bullet and did it.” – Callum.

According to Greg, 3 SIDED CUBE’s project manager by day and resident Jedi by night, “one of minds main focuses is helping people build mental resilience”.

Greg also said “there’s lots of tips in there – if your mood is consistently low, the app would help, and it would make sense for someone who’s perhaps not in a good mood a lot of the time.”

“It helps you to build ways of dealing with emotions”.

Ruth Richards, Head of Communications and Marketing for Mind, said:

“Students have pressures coming at them from all sides. As a consequence, they are actually one of the groups most at risk of developing mental health problems. In response to this, Mind wanted to develop an app with students that wouldn’t just be ‘another Facebook’, but would be fun, intuitive and effective in helping keep on top of the ups and downs of uni life.

“The result is ‘Emoodji’, which draws on emojis and selfies to allow students to capture and share emotions quickly, whether you’re at a particularly high or low moment in your university life. The app also provides relevant tips for coping with everything from finances to exam stress. We’re really pleased to see that so many students have already got behind Emoodji and hope it provides a useful tool for coping with university.”

The release of this app comes just days after the government has pledged to put one billion pounds into the NHS towards the improvement of mental health services.

The large sum of money could potentially reduce suicides by 10%, provide 24-hour mental health support and help up to one million more people by 2021.
