Dressed to impress or depress?

Dressed to impress or depress?

THE Oscars red carpet is almost like a glamorous fashion show, the clothes horses for the major powerhouses in the fashion industry wear designs that are couture, vintage or fresh off the runway.

“You just referred to the actresses as clothes horses” – And that they are.
Many are paid, yes, paid, just to wear those dresses.

I’m pretty sure there are a few people in this list who are wearing what they wore, not because they liked the dress, but because they liked the figure they were offered to wear it.

The Dresses

Hailee Steinfeld had one of my favourite dresses.

It was by Ralph and Russo; a British Haute Couture brand.

The dress is a translucent white/silver tulle type material, although it’s more than likely a lot more fancier than tulle, but I’m not a fashionista, so don’t hate, just appreciate… Appreciate the fact that I can appreciate this!

screen-shot-2017-02-26-at-23-43-54

Instead of just saying “I love the neckline”, I’ll say I love the scalloped edges of the dress, it’s beautiful and it’s not just a normal hem, it shows a completely obvious element of detail that’s often overlooked, and understated.

The dress is embroidered with the most beautiful flowers, using a metallic threat. The fabric, metallic nature of the dress and the flowers affords Hailee an air of ethereal innocence. All in all, a really lovely, light and age appropriate dress.

Way to go!

Jessica Biel

Oh honey.

No.

No.

NO.

Colour – Gurl, you went for gold, but you got the fools gold.

I mean… It’s not a terrible dress, but it’s not a great one either, like, where are the rest of the sequins?

Screen Shot 2017-02-27 at 04.10.04.png
It looks sloppy – It looks like it was the last dress left in TK Maxx because one of the new members of staff accidentally hovered it up and she had to pick it up on the way.

I ain’t even sorry.

Brie Larson in Oscar De La Renta – Uhhhmazing

This dress creates such an amazing silhouette.

The neckline is gorgeous, it is literally on point…On points?

It’s black and velvety. It’s a simple black dress, but it’s really not. It makes you think.

Screen Shot 2017-02-27 at 04.45.30.png

Emma Stone’s dress reminded me of a long flapper dress.
it was a perfect fit for her, and I love the way that it was the perfect length – Of course, it wouldn’t be made too long, but the way in which the fringe just hits the floor is spot on.

Screen Shot 2017-02-27 at 04.28.21.png

She’s wearing gold, implying she’s going for the gold. It’s a beautifully warm coloured dress and it suits her skin tone perfectly… Will she take the gold though, or will the only gold she goes home with be her dress?

Dakota Johnson.

Screen Shot 2017-02-27 at 04.28.53.png

I don’t really like the dress, but I kind of do.
I don’t really like the actress, but the dress fits really well, and the way it moves when she walks is reminiscent of liquid gold – it’s really elegant, well fitting and not revealing, which is rare, because everyone normally whips out whatever body part they want.

Soz, I’m late, I was busy bitching and moaning about E!’s poor coverage.

Jimmy Kimmel is already doing a better job than Chris Rock last year… At about this point in the show I felt like I was walking on eggshells, and I was sat in my bed on the other side of the world…

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – Colleen Atwood… She looks so shocked! I’m not sure why, as the costumes in the film were amazing!

02.10 – THE HIDDEN FIGURES LADIES

KATHERINE G. JOHNSON is taking to the stage! She’s 98 years old, and is one of the ladies that the truly inspirational film is based upon. She looks so happy!
It’s really touching to see the audience cry. She’s wearing a beautifully soft blue dress, that reminds me of my favourite Yankee Candle, Sweet Garden Pea, of which is such a beautiful colour for a woman of her age to wear.
It’s bright, yet delicate, and when associated with that candle, so comforting.

The sound editor ended his speech by saying “All we need is love”… Although these may be lyrics, they’re the truest words I’ve heard all night… This world lacks love and compassion, people.

Every actress looks so pleased and proud after their clip has played. It’s really beautiful to see that they’re proud, because I’m sure they work really hard in some demanding roles.

And the oscar goes to…

Viola Davis!

vii

I’m really happy about this; she’s a fantastic actress, he was amazing in Fences, and in my favourite, The Help!

Her speech is such a tearjerker!

“Exhume the stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those stories to fruition”

“I became an artist, the only profession to celebrate what it means to be a life”

I’m crying! Her speech is so beautiful, she’s so grateful to everyone, and everything. I’m so happy they haven’t played her out, because if they did, it would be a travesty to ruin her mid-flow… Such a beautiful speech!

Good night world.

OH MY GOD

OH MY GOD

THEY READ THE WRONG CARD

THE BEST PICTURE IS MOONLIGHT!

That was the most awkward moment of my life, and it’s nothing to do with me!

E! Red Carpet fashion coverage is not okay.

E! Red Carpet fashion coverage is not okay.

I love E!, don’t get me wrong.
It’s where I gained my journalistic dreams from, but I’m watching the red carpet coverage now, and the commentary on the fashion is literally a waste.

They are just saying “I love the neckline” “I love this… I love that”…
It seems so fickle, so fake, so forced.
In fact, it reminds me of fobbing your mum off when she shows you a grey jumper, similar to the seventeen others she has in her wardrobe and you’re like “I love it!” just so you can stop shopping and go home. (Sorry mum, I love you, and that grey jumper does look great, I promise)

It’s a shame, it really is.

It’s an insult to the designers who have worked hard designing, fitting and customising these pieces of art for the clothes horses to wear, and all that’s being said is they ‘love it’.
I don’t think people want to know if you love the neckline, you need to comment on the different dynamics, elements and the different fabrics and the feelings and thoughts they evoke and  subsequently convey.

Everyone is wearing a little blue ribbon; As noted by the very observant (jokes) Kris Jenner. Instead of explaining it fully, especially for the international audience, Giuliana just referred people to the E! website to read an article on it. I’m all for synergy but that’s just lazy.

I’ll pick up the slack, hopefully they’ll give me a cut of what they’re getting paid?

So, this is Chrissy and John, first name basis, we cool, we cool.

screen-shot-2017-02-26-at-23-43-22

I’m not sure who Chrissy is wearing, but the belt was an important factor in the E! Red Carpet commentary, and I know John is wearing Gucci, and looking sleek.

He’s wearing a simple black suit, and a black bow tie, but not any bow tie, it’s what I’d describe as a tear drop, but because it’s just a subtle difference, it makes him stand out from the crowd… Not just a bow tie, a legendary bow tie.

Chrissy’s dress is gold, nude, and cream.
Gold has connotations of regality, alongside evoking an Oscar award… Which isn’t merely a coincidence as they’re at the Academy Awards,  of which is celebrating the best films from the past 12 months in cinema.

Gold also has connotations of passion, wealth, glitz and glam, yet this dress doesn’t go over the top, as the rest of the body is a pale gold, warm, creamy colour of a smooth silky material.  Silk is something that is woven so intricately, and it’s such a delicate material too. The beaded bust and the smooth silk skirt are juxtapositions, that come together to create the perfect dress.

Her colours are warm, welcoming and inviting, alongside this, they’re carrying all the connotations necessary for an award ceremony.
Her dress, alongside John’s suit make them look like the perfect Ying and Yang, and as exemplified in their body language, that is what they are.

Sorry E!, I love you, I do, but your coverage is sucking a bunch of eggs.

Academy Awards 2017: Red Carpet

Academy Awards 2017: Red Carpet

It’s 10.30PM and the Red Carpet is LIT.

I also need a cup of tea.

Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea.

Screen Shot 2017-02-26 at 22.36.40.png

This kid seems humble. I didn’t watch Manchester by the Sea. It sounds like it has a cold setting temperature wise, ain’t nobody got time for that.

Giuliana Rancic – She’s looking icy in a Georges Chakra Spring 2017 Couture gown.
For reals, homegirl is looking like Elsa.

Ruth Negga –

When she was speaking about her outfit she seemed a bit off… IDK, is she hungry or?

Screen Shot 2017-02-26 at 22.53.49.png

Olivia Culpo is wearing a dress partnered with Stella Artois, wherein each Stella challice that is sold provides five years of clean water for those in need. Fun fact, bits of challice are on the dress.

screen-shot-2017-02-26-at-22-54-22

Whilst the dress is kinda cute, her hair is not… Looks like she’s trying to be a scene kid circa 2008, or is trying to cover a big spot. Also, that pony tail looks fresh from a pony. Sorry not sorry.

Hailee Steinfeld is looking hellacute in her butterfly dress!
Loves it!

Screen Shot 2017-02-26 at 23.43.54.png

Taraji P. Henson is mixing sass and class, of which has provided a classic and cool Oscars look. Blue velvet is fabulous.
She’s talking to Ryan Seacrest about the way that she chose her role for Hidden Figures, and is speaking about what resonates the most about the film for her.

screen-shot-2017-02-26-at-23-43-41

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are looking super cute… If you ever check the comments section of the Daily Mail everyone seems to hate them, but I don’t…. Speaking of hate, why do people go out of their way to waste their time and breath being negative about someone? The only person you’re giving hate to is yourself, you eggs.

screen-shot-2017-02-26-at-23-43-22

Emma Roberts looking sassy af, acting that way too…

screen-shot-2017-02-26-at-23-43-11

However, I don’t find her sass cool, hers seems arrogant…

Hidden Figures – Live blog

Hidden Figures – Live blog

So, I’m watching Hidden Figures.

hidden

It’s the first film on the Oscar list I found and I have a feeling I’ll enjoy this more than the Revenant. I watched that last year for my Oscar coverage and it was the longest film of my life – Honestly, I’d rather have a hangover than watch that film.

18.10 – So I’m watching Hidden Figures – I’m 15 minutes in and I’m loving it! I basically love anything with Octavia Spencer in, she is an amazing and incredible actress!

18.11- Kirsten Dunst – I haven’t actually seen her in a film since Bring It On – And now she’s actually playing an adult, which is weird. I think you expect a stronger voice to come out of her, but it sounds so weak, alongside her poor accent.

18.18 – I haven’t heard from Janelle Monae in a while, but then again, I haven’t been looking for her. Loved her album a few million years ago tho..

*** I’m not one of these people who are militant about black rights etc… I’m all for equality, but I really enjoy films that show what it was like for both women, and black women in the 60’s. Films like Hairspray made all the hardships that folk ‘in the day’ faced seem like a joke, but this film is really highlighting the issues.***

For example,Katherine, a mathematician is a single, widowed mother who is working full time at NASA to provide for her children. When she gets up to get a cup of coffee, she’s looked at like she just used her hat to brew the coffee. I’d legitimately hate life if that was me.

I am aware that this is a film, but it’s non-fiction, and I can imagine everything that’s occurred already, and everything that will occur throughout the film would have happened in the ’60’s.***

18.40 – Katherine runs, she runs in heels, she climbs ladders and she does mathematical calculations… I’m tired just watching this – You go, girl!

18.47 – “You act right, you are right, that’s for certain.”

19.59 – I took a break, it’s been a long day… The soundtrack/score is amazing for this film. It’s literally like the icing on the cake!

I’m currently reading about the historical accuracy of the film at the moment – A lot of what goes on regarding the ladies NASA careers is actually true, however, there aren’t any correlations with regards to the timelines.

20.16 – I’ve finished the film.
It was so good! It was both factual, entertaining and a thought evoking motion picture, of which is something quite rare (in my eyes) in the current thoughtless, self-obsessed selfie society we currently live in.

I’m actually researching the three ‘Hidden Figures’ this is based on – Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Katharine G. Johnson.
Mary and Dorothy are no longer with us, but Katharine is aged 98.

I believe a film like this could inspire young girls to persevere in maths and science, two subjects that are often considered masculine and unglamorous, but what’s more important? Glamour or success?

Success, in my opinion, and you can gain glamour as a result of success….

To conclude…

Will this film win any Academy Awards?
Despite it being a great film, with amazing and thoughtful cinematography, I don’t think it has what it takes to win. I feel bad for saying this, but it’s just a part of the cold, hard reality of life in the film industry.

It’s worth noting that all 13,000 involved in the production of the film should be proud that they were a part of a film nominated for an Oscar, and everyone should know that this is a great film, but it’s missing a certain pizzazz that it’s predecessors had that made them worthy of winning.

Hmm… What film should I watch next?

A Twitter user, @TyeHarveyy has suggested Fences… It’s on!

2017 Academy Award nominees

So, tonight is the 89th Academy Awards, aka Oscars. It’s being held in one of Los Angeles’ most iconic theatres – the Kodak theatre.

Unfortunately, due to work and academic (lol) commitments, I can’t be in attendance tonight, but I will be watching from the comfort of my own home, in my dressing gown and other pyjama type clothing items.
